Island 61 - Lettermullen/Leitir Meallain, County Galway, Ireland

Lettermullen/Lettermullan (Leitir Meallain) is linked to Gorumna and the small island of Furnace by road bridges.  It is part of the Irish speaking Gaeltacht area and in 2011 had a population of 241. Lettermullen, Lettermore, Annaghvaan, Gorumna and several smaller islands are known collectively as Ceanta na nOilean.  I visited the island briefly in 2004.

There is a primary school on Lettermullen, a post office, a heritage centre and a Catholic church.  However the only general store was closed when I visited in May 2017 and was up for sale.
