Island 344 - Brown Island, County Cork

Brown Island is a "blink and you'll miss it" kind of place.  It is a small flat tidal island at the north eastern end of Cork Harbour located between the mainland of County Cork to the north and Foaty Island to the south.  It is separated from Foaty Island by a stretch of water called Slatty Water.  The island, which is about 350 metres from north to south and 300 metres from east to west at its widest point, is covered in grass and trees.

The mud surrounding the island doesn't look very firm.  However there is a much easier way to reach it, as the main N25 road into Cork from the east runs right over Brown Island.  What you can't do is stop to explore the island or take any photos however, as the road is a busy dual carriageway with no laybys.  I don't know if it called Brown Island after a person called brown or because the mud surrounding it is brown!

  1. A good spot for Bird watching, and geese have a tendency to gather here. Mudfields bring numerous number of birds. Quay was used to transport materials across the area , and was in time for the smuggling of brandy and alcohol.
