Island 80 - Tiree, Inner Hebrides

Tiree is mainly low lying and flat.  It is 10 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point.  It is one of the sunniest and driest places in Scotland, although it rained most of the 2 days I spent there in 2007.  The highest point on the island is Ben Hynish at 141 metres.  The island has lots and lots of great beaches of silver white coloured shell sand.  There are several prehistoric sites on the island.

The Skerryvore Lighthouse Museum in the Old Signal Tower at Hynish is very interesting if you like lighthouses and so is the Island Life Museum, which is located in 3 traditional thatched cottages at Sandaig.  The cottages are furnished as they would have been in the 19th century.

The windsurfing Wave Classic event is held on the island every October and draws competitors from all round the world.

Spotty House
The inhabitants have a habit of overpainting the cement between the stones, which makes many of the older house look like they have spots.

Ringing Stone near Vaul
Clach a'Choire - 10 ton rock balanced on one edge.  It emits a high ringing note when hit with another stone.
