Island 11 - Grimsay, Outer Hebrides

Grimsay (Griomasaigh)  is a stepping stone on the North Ford causeway between North Uist and Benbecula.  The causeway was opened in 1960.  I don't expect many visitors stop to explore the island.  There is a fishing harbour at Kallin/Ceallan where shellfish, farmed fish and flatfish are landed.  The harbour was built in 1985.  The population of Grimsay in 2011 was 169.  There is a circular single track road around the island, which is 4 miles from east to west and 2 miles from north to south.

On the north coast of the island to the north of Loch Hornaraigh the remains of what is thought to be an Iron Age wheelhouse were excavated by a retired engineer called Roy Ashworth from 1993-1997.  The same site was used by subsequent generations.  However the site is not marked on Ordnance Survey maps.
