Trondra has been linked to Shetland Mainland by a road bridge just south of Scalloway since 1971. Another bridge from it on to West Burra was opened at around the same time. It is a pleasant grass covered island. The island is approximately 4 km from north to south and 1 km from east to west and the highest point is 60 metres above sea level. In 2011 it had a population of 135. The houses are evenly distributed around the island. The rest of the island is used for grazing animals.
At Burland there is a Croft Trail, which has old Shetland breeds of livestock.
